Hoyer Statement on the Declaration of Famine in Parts of South Sudan
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on three United Nations agencies declaring that more than 100,000 people are living in famine conditions in South Sudan and that an additional 5.4 million people will be in need of food assistance by July if no action is taken:
“It is reprehensible that South Sudanese politicians cannot reach a peaceful end to the violent and destabilizing conflict they have created, which now threatens to exacerbate a famine that could leave millions without food. The promise of South Sudan’s independence will be lost if its leaders cannot put the interests of the country’s people first. I continue to call on President Kiir and former Vice President Machar to end the fighting that has already sown so much instability and created a refugee crisis. The people of South Sudan deserve the future of peace, unity, and opportunity that only a political solution can bring.”
