U.S. stocks rise as Fed stands pat, Apple rallies
U.S. stocks rose on Wednesday as the Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged while a rally in Apple Inc. shares buoyed sentiment. The central bank stood pat on rates, noting that although consumer and businesss sentiment had improved, investment activity remains "soft." Meanwhile, Apple, which contributes about 60 points to the Dow's gains, jumped 6.1%. The S&P 500 edged up less than a point to close at 2,279. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 25 points, or 0.1%, to end at 19,889 while the Nasdaq Composite Index gained 27 points, or 0.5%, to close at 5,642.
