Hoyer Statement on Select Panel Contempt Vote
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today ahead of a vote by the Select Committee to Attack Women's Health on whether to recommend to the House that StemExpress be held in contempt of Congress:
“Today’s meeting of the Select Panel to consider recommending contempt of Congress charges against StemExpress is nothing more than the continuation of a months-long witch-hunt that is putting the lives of doctors, researchers, first responders, and patients at risk. StemExpress has produced approximately 1,700 pages of documents and offered witnesses to explain its business practices, all of which show no evidence of wrongdoing. Chairwoman Blackburn refused these offers after a four-month delay and is abruptly pursuing charges of criminal contempt just before the election. Additionally, under the House Resolution that created the Select Panel, Chairwoman Blackburn does not have the authority to bring contempt charges.
“This is purely political theater, with real-world consequences for medical research and women’s health. Speaker Ryan ought to put an immediate end to this Select Panel and cease House Republicans’ baseless attacks on those working every day to help Americans live healthier lives.”
