Hoyer Statement on the Zika Virus in Florida
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to news that the Centers for Disease Control has identified four cases of the Zika virus locally-transmitted in Florida:
"That the Centers for Disease Control has identified four cases of the Zika virus in Florida that were likely acquired through local mosquito-borne transmission is very alarming. More so, it finally ought to spur Republicans in Congress to take action to provide emergency supplemental funding to combat the spread of Zika and prevent a full-blown epidemic in large parts of our country. That this Republican-led House has adjourned for the summer without taking any responsible action to address the threat of Zika is reprehensible.
"I urge the Speaker to bring to the Floor the bipartisan Murray-Blunt agreement passed by the Senate that would provide emergency supplemental funding. We must address this public health crisis without further delay."
