Hoyer Statement on Earth Day, Signing of the Paris Agreement
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Earth Day, the same day Secretary of State John Kerry signed the Paris Agreement:
“On Earth Day, we reflect on our shared responsibility to protect our planet for future generations. To do so will require all people and all nations to work in concert and with an understanding that we are all in this together. That's why the Paris climate agreement that Sec. Kerry is signing today is so important. It represents renewed commitment among major carbon pollution emitting countries to take actions intended to limit the rise in global temperatures and combat the causes of climate change.
"We must continue to move toward more sustainable, renewable sources of energy, which will not only protect our environment but also spur job creation and economic growth in our country. I’ve been proud to lead efforts on the House Floor to defeat Republican bills and amendments that would strip away environmental protections and willfully ignore the very real dangers of climate change. We’ve seen what can happen when rivers, lakes, and water supplies are poisoned and when the air and soil are contaminated. Congress has a responsibility to lead on natural resources conservation and environmental protection, and I will continue to support policies that safeguard our planet for the safety and enjoyment of those to come.”
