Hoyer Statement on January Affordable Care Act Enrollment Numbers WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Department of Health and Human Services released information on the health insurance marketplace enrollment numbers through February 1: "The enrollment numbers released today show that there is a clear demand for affordable, quality health care. Since October, 3.3 million Americans have now enrolled in plans – including 1.1 million new enrollees in January alone. Moreover, young people are enrolling at an increased pace, with enrollment of those between the ages of 18 and 34 rising 65% over the previous month. “In addition to the 3.3 million Americans who have purchased affordable coverage through the marketplaces, millions of Americans are benefitting from the law’s patient and consumer protections. These protections include an end to annual and lifetime caps on coverage, a ban on policies that charge higher premiums for women than men, and rules that forbid insurers from dropping patients when they get sick. A pre-existing condition is no longer a lifetime barrier to affordable coverage, and young people under age 26 can remain on their parents’ plans while seeking their first jobs. “I hope Republicans will cease their obsession with repealing the Affordable Care Act and undoing these health reforms, and instead work with Democrats to ensure it is implemented as efficiently and fairly as possible.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
