Hoyer Statement on Fifth Anniversary of Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act
WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today commemorating the fifth anniversary of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act being signed into law:
“Five years after the Democratic Congress and President Obama enacted the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, we must continue to make women’s equality and access to opportunity a hallmark of the Democratic agenda – and I am proud of our work to make progress in this critical area. With four in ten households with children under eighteen now supported primarily by a woman’s income, ensuring that equal work brings home equal pay is not only an issue of fairness for women but one of economic importance for all working families.
“Women play a central role in our economy as workers, entrepreneurs, innovators, caregivers, and professionals. House Democrats will continue to stand up for women in our economy and for equal rights and equal justice for women in our society. That’s why we made the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act the first law we sent the President in the 111th Congress when we were in the Majority – and it’s why we are pushing for the adoption of the Paycheck Fairness Act today. It is also the reason we made sure that discrimination against women by insurance companies was banned under the Affordable Care Act. Democrats have stood strongly against Republican attempts to end protections against discrimination and cuts to funding that benefit women and families in need, and I am glad that the Democratic Caucus’s Steering and Policy Committee is working hard to keep the issue of women’s opportunity and equality at the forefront of our agenda to strengthen and grow America’s middle class.”
