Hoyer Statement Marking the One Year Anniversary of the Newtown Shooting WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement marking the one year anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, which is tomorrow, December 14: "Tomorrow we mark the one-year anniversary of the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, which took 26 innocent lives, including the lives of 20 young children. As we do so, we must remain committed to ending senseless gun violence by keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals and those with severe mental illnesses. In the year that has passed since the Newtown tragedy, over 11,000 Americans have been killed by gun violence – a statistic that is completely unacceptable. There are legislative steps, consistent with the rights of responsible gun owners, that the House can and should take next year to prevent future tragedies like the one in Newtown. I will continue to stand up for the victims of gun violence and their families by pushing for a common-sense approach to background checks and other appropriate measures that a majority of Americans support and that will make our communities safer.” Visit www.democraticwhip.gov/ for more press, floor and member resources.
